According to the available images of the pilot, the series was going to have a darker tone. The only existing material is some short fragments and images shown by Dana Terrace in a live stream. Some storyboards and animations that were made around the time of the pilot have also surfaced over time, however, it's very likely that they weren't meant for the pilot pitch that was sent to Disney themselves. On July 20, 2021, a test animation done by Sugarcube Animation without audio that very likely contains some scenes from the pilot, leaked.
While never released, a selection of storyboards and plot details have been revealed:

After class, Luz offers Amity a drawing she made of her, commenting that she got a papercut while making the drawing, but worked the blood into the picture as blush on Amity's face.

  |description1 =Said to be a test animation produced by the animation studio, Sugarcube. It uses the pilot designs of the characters, though King has a blue and red eye color here rather than the violet and red colors seen in the stills. This was certainly produced around the same time as the pilot but it's likely that most scenes in this animation aren't in the pilot itself.

Various scenes featuring Luz, Eda, and King are shown off. The Eda scene appears to match up 1:1 with one of the pilot stills, so that likely could be a scene from the pilot. There is also a scene featuring a character named "William" who at this point is a very early version of Hunter.
