The Owl House is an American animated fantasy television series created by Dana Terrace that premiered on Disney Channel on January 10, 2020. The series ran for 3 seasons and concluded on April 8th, 2023, after the third and final special in a set of 3 aired. The series is mostly known for its LGBTQ+ representation with several important characters ranging from being bisexual (Luz Noceda), lesbian (Amity Blight) or even non-binary (Raine Whispers).

A test animation of the series was produced during some time in 2017.. Not to be confused with the actual pilot of the series which was just storyboards, the animation was created as a “Next Time On” animation, showing off the vibe and look of the series. [1] The art style and character design of the test animation are similar to the final series, with a few differences:

Changes to the final series’ designs

  • Luz's hair was going to be black, and her shirt had purple stripes; the shirt that she wore would be featured in her wardrobe as an Easter egg in the episode "Yesterday’s Lie", which Vee takes out before Luz interrupts her.
  • King had amber fur, a yellow-tipped tail, and violet eyes with red sclerae.
  • Willow’s name was going to be Paulina. The reason for the name change to Willow in the final series is currently unknown.
  • The animation test features a character named "Sir William", who otherwise appears nowhere in the final series. The scene he was featured in would be recreated in the season 2 episode, “Hunting Palismen” with Hunter standing in for Sir William.

From what we can tell of the test animation. the series was going to have a darker tone. For a while the only existing material was some short fragments and images Dana Terrace showed in a live stream. Some storyboards and animations that were made around the time of the test also surfaced over time. On July 20th, 2021, a test animation done by Sugarcube Animation without audio leaked online, with the full version with more complete animation, new scenes and full audio being leaked sometime in February 2023.

The complete test animation that surfaced in February 2023, which shows fully animated versions of 2 scenes previously seen only in animatic forms (Luz riding the Unicorn Spider creature and the “Puppet Luz” scene as dubbed by the fandom). It also shows for the first time the Willow scene shown in the original set of stills, revealing that her name was Paulina in the test animation.

A video comparing both versions of the test animation that were leaked online, showing off how the full version of the animation has slightly different animations in certain scenes and more refined objects and backgrounds to the original, muted version of the test.

At 1 minute and 11 seconds in the video, a small clip of King is shown where he has a paper bag stuck to his head. Then at the 1:15 mark a bit of footage of the still with Luz, King, and Eda beside each other.
