(I don't think it should be just referred to as an "animation reel" because that would imply it's less significant than it really is. It makes more sense to call it a pitch pilot too, because that's what it's intended purpose was, and why all those scenes were made, not just for animation tests.)

The Owl House is an American animated fantasy television series created by Dana Terrace that premiered on Disney Channel on January 10, 2020.

The pilot of the series was produced during 6 months, from April to September of 2017. According to Dana Terrace, the pilot "was in many ways very similar to the episode "A Lying Witch and a Warden", but there were a couple of major differences".

The pilot consists entirely of storyboards instead of being animated, many of which were reused in the first episode.

While never released, a selection of storyboards and plot details have been revealed:

  • The beginning of the episode involves Luz being harassed by a group of school bullies. Amity then stands up for her, leading Luz to try to befriend her. After class, Luz offers Amity a drawing she made of her, commenting that she got a papercut while making the drawing, but worked the blood into the picture as blush on Amity's face.
  • The first encounters between Luz, Eda and King play out in a similar way to the final series.
  • Lilith is featured in the pilot as the principal of Hexside, and at some point transforms into a bat-creature.
  • By the end of the episode, Luz becomes trapped within the Demon Realm, and must set out to find a way home.
  • The pilot is commonly confused for the Owl House pitch pilot/animation reel which served a pretty different purpose than the pilot episode:
