In mid-April 2008, alternative metal band Deftones began recording what was intended to be their sixth studio album, '''''Eros''''' (the name stemming from an in-joke between band members about the excessive use of the term in German pornography). Somewhat fittingly, the tentative names for several songs were named after strippers.

In July of the same year, Chino Moreno posted an instrumental demo online for a new song titled "You've Seen the Butcher" (they would later re-use this title for a different song on their 2010 album ''Diamond Eyes'' after ''Eros'' was shelved). In September, they began playing a new track called "Melanie" during live-performances, and recording of the album commenced all the way up until November 2008. Alongside recording the album, they released 5 in-studio mini-documentaries online<ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FevOsH6bQ9w In-studio special 1 of 5.] Retrieved 17 Jan '13.</ref><ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=c6vtD81rcMI In-studio special 2 of 5.] Retrieved 17 Jan '13.</ref><ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hywI1emDHk#at=16 In-studio special 3 of 5.] Retrieved 17 Jan '13.</ref><ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Rn_OT-Jh4Y#at=23 In-studio special 4 of 5.] Retrieved 17 Jan '13.</ref><ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyH1v7RF5H4#at=25 In-studio special 5 of 5.] Retrieved 17 Jan '13.</ref> following the album's progress.

Tension had been rising between the band members from 2000 to 2007 due to troubles in their personal lives. In 2007, the band had an intervention of sorts, making sure if they still wanted to be a band and, after unanimously agreeing to stay together, revamping their studio to include a bar and generally make it a more casual place to hang out. By October 2007, they had written half an album's worth of songs and made the tentative title of ''Eros'' for it in January 2008. Alongside recording the album, they released five in-studio mini-documentaries online following the album's progress for the first time in the band's history.<ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FevOsH6bQ9w In-studio special 1 of 5.] Retrieved 17 Jan '13.</ref><ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=c6vtD81rcMI In-studio special 2 of 5.] Retrieved 17 Jan '13.</ref><ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hywI1emDHk#at=16 In-studio special 3 of 5.] Retrieved 17 Jan '13.</ref><ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Rn_OT-Jh4Y#at=23 In-studio special 4 of 5.] Retrieved 17 Jan '13.</ref><ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyH1v7RF5H4#at=25 In-studio special 5 of 5.] Retrieved 17 Jan '13.</ref>

On November 3, 2008, just as Moreno had left the studio after recording some vocal tracks for the new album (of which he was halfway through completing) he was delivered the grave news that bassist Chi Cheng had been involved in a serious car accident only a short while beforehand. Cheng was rushed to hospital, and was later announced to be in a coma. All production on the album immediately ceased and the band turned their focus to their injured friend.
===Chi Cheng's Death and Shelving===
On November 3rd, 2008, just as Chino Moreno, the lead vocalist, had left the studio after recording some vocal tracks for ''Eros'' (of which he was halfway through completing), he was told that bassist Chi Cheng had been involved in a serious car accident shortly before that. Cheng was rushed to hospital, and was later announced to be in a coma. All production on the album immediately ceased and the band turned their focus to their injured friend.

As of Cheng's accident, he is now able to move his legs on command, and follow people around the room with his eyes, but he can't move or speak otherwise. Deftones have since released 2 albums with replacement bassist Sergio Vega, titled ''Diamond Eyes'' (2010) and ''Koi No Yokan'' (2012) respectively, in both of which Cheng is frequently alluded to. The band have publicly said that the reason for the new albums was a purely creative choice to write an uplifting album (as ''Eros'' is said to be quite a dark album) to help cope with the current situation of band-mate Cheng.
After the hospital visit, Cheng was reportedly in a semi-comatose state, being able to move his legs and follow people with his eyes, but unable to speak or move otherwise. Deftones went on to release two more albums in 2010 and 2012 (''Diamond Eyes'' and ''Koi No Yokan'' respectively) with replacement bassist Sergio Vega. Their official reasoning for this was because ''Eros'' was a very dark album, so they wanted to make more uplifting albums to cope with Cheng's condition. Despite Cheng seemingly improving, he died of cardiac arrest on April 13th, 2013, making ''Eros'' the last thing the bassist worked on.

The band have stated that while they do intend to release the album at some point, they have not decided how or when it would happen, although Moreno has stated in an interview that if it were to be released, he'd like it to be released after Cheng fully recovers from his accident, as it was the last record Cheng played on, and so that they could tour for the album with all the original members. It has also been said that they want enough time to pass between Cheng's accident and the release of ''Eros'', so as to not draw a correlation between the two events, and so that the songs could hold up on their own merit.
===Future Official Release===
Moreno stated that he would have preferred to release the album after Cheng got better so they could go on tour with all of the original band members. Since his death, however, he's stated that while the band definitely wants to release the album, they also want to wait for a time where the songs can be viewed on their own merits.<ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UvDp1oRmjY Chino Moreno interview (May 10, 2013).] Retrieved 20 May '13.</ref><ref>[http://www.theprp.com/2013/05/21/news/deftones-chino-moreno-on-releasing-eros-will-it-happen-soon-i-dont-know-probably-not/ Chino Moreno interview (May 21, 2013).] Retrieved 21 May '13.</ref>

A piece of artwork taken from the official Deftones website during the production period of ''Eros'' is suspected to be the album cover, but this is yet to be confirmed.

Finally, on April 13th, 2014, Moreno uploaded the song "Smile" from the album to his Youtube channel in honor of Cheng's passing the previous year, making it the first time they officially released a track from the album so far. Two days later, despite Moreno himself releasing it, Warner Music Group took it down on the grounds of copyright infringement. It has since been mirrored.

In a recent interview,<ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UvDp1oRmjY Chino Moreno interview (May 10, 2013).] Retrieved 20 May '13.</ref> singer Chino Moreno expressed a desire to complete and release ''Eros'', suggesting that it would have been inappropriate to consider releasing the album with Chi in his paralysed state, and that since his passing, it's now something they can begin to consider, in his memory; however, in a followup interview,<ref>[http://www.theprp.com/2013/05/21/news/deftones-chino-moreno-on-releasing-eros-will-it-happen-soon-i-dont-know-probably-not/ Chino Moreno interview (May 21, 2013).] Retrieved 21 May '13.</ref> he also stated that it's probably not going to happen any time soon.

A track from ''Eros'', titled "Smile", was uploaded to Chino Moreno's official YouTube account on April 13, 2014 to commemorate the one year anniversary of bassist Chi Cheng's passing. In addition to this gesture, Moreno also tweeted a link to the video with the message "Chi, We miss you today and everyday. -deftones".
Heartfelt thanks to Deftones for this moving and bittersweet tribute; RIP Chi.
As of April 15, 2014 Warner Music Group has since (rather disrespectfully, in my opinion) brought a copyright claim against the upload and has subsequently had it removed. It is currently being mirrored below via our Lost Media Wiki YouTube channel.

In mid-April 2008, alternative metal band Deftones began recording what was intended to be their sixth studio album, Eros (the name stemming from an in-joke between band members about the excessive use of the term in German pornography). Somewhat fittingly, the tentative names for several songs were named after strippers.

Production

Tension had been rising between the band members from 2000 to 2007 due to troubles in their personal lives. In 2007, the band had an intervention of sorts, making sure if they still wanted to be a band and, after unanimously agreeing to stay together, revamping their studio to include a bar and generally make it a more casual place to hang out. Alongside recording the album, they released five in-studio mini-documentaries online following the album's progress for the first time in the band's history.[1][2][3][4][5]

Chi Cheng's Death and Shelving

On November 3rd, 2008, just as Chino Moreno, the lead vocalist, had left the studio after recording some vocal tracks for Eros (of which he was halfway through completing), he was told that bassist Chi Cheng had been involved in a serious car accident shortly before that. Cheng was rushed to hospital, and was later announced to be in a coma. All production on the album immediately ceased and the band turned their focus to their injured friend.

Despite Cheng seemingly improving, he died of cardiac arrest on April 13th, 2013, making Eros the last thing the bassist worked on.

Future Official Release

Moreno stated that he would have preferred to release the album after Cheng got better so they could go on tour with all of the original band members. Since his death, however, he's stated that while the band definitely wants to release the album, they also want to wait for a time where the songs can be viewed on their own merits.[6][7]
