'Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Chōzetsu Hakkutsu ONLINE' ((天元突破グレンラガン 超絶発掘ONLINE), or in English as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Superior Excavation Online was an online game based off the mecha anime Gurren Lagann developed by Konami for release on PC.[1]

Gameplay

The load-up screen one would see when opening the game.

The player assumes the role of a digger and drills for treasures in first person, much like Simon does in the anime. There was also a shop to upgrade and obtain new drills, which was ran by a character unique to the game named Asaki. The player also had the ability to collect digital trading cards based off the shows's characters and trade them with other players.[2]

The digital trading cards featured still images of the characters and "famous scenes" from the anime. Additionally, they also had artwork containing characters "making facial expressions they don't usually do," which implies new artwork was created for the cards as well.

History

The game began life as a closed beta limited to 3,000 people with a Konami ID which opened up sometime around the beginning of the show's release on April 6, 2007. The deadline to join the beta was at 10:00 am JST on April 9, 2007. Unfortunately, the beta ended about a week later on April 16th, 2007 as downloading the game caused an error that crashed Windows indefinitely.[3] Konami had to mail out replacement 500GB external hard drives to players so they could back up their files while reinstalling the operating system.[4] [5]

Availability

Due to the game's beta prematurely ending as well as its detrimental effect on people's hard drives, little to nothing of the game exists outside of a few low-quality screenshots from around the time it came out. As of 2024, the game itself has not seen the light of day again.
