PLUS e device

Status: Lost

PLUS e (プラスe) was an touch screen entertainment device developed by Japanese parking system developer JCM Inc. and installed at table, mainly in casual restaurants and izakaya pubs. Customers could inexpensively play video games, read fortunes, and watch cartoons and music videos on this device.

History

On January 22, 2001, JCM announced the "PLUS e" entertainment device in collaboration with seven other companies, Hitachi Software Engineering (currently, Hitachi Systems & Services), Tokyo Broadcasting System, BS-i (currently, BS-TBS), Hitachi Keiyo Engineering (currently, Hitachi KE System), Hitachi Electronics Services (currently, Hitachi Systems), JSAT Corporation (currently, SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation), and NTT Communications Corporation. At the time of the announcement, 13 companies, including Avex, announced the provision of content to devices, and 11 companies, including Skylark, announced the introduction of devices. On January 25 of the same year, the device was introduced on a trial basis at the Sekimae location of Gusto, a restaurant chain operated by Skylark. JCM announced that it would have the devices installed in 30 stores in March, followed by full-scale installation in the companies' stores in July[1]. After a trial installation at 30 Gusto stores through July of the same year, Skylark concluded that each device generated an average of 700 to 800 yen in sales and increased customer traffic, and by April 2002 Skylark had begun full-scale installation of the devices in all Gusto stores.

About 15,000 PLUS e units were installed in about 1,000 restaurants in April 2002, and in May and June of the same year, the companies began offering music videos for 100 yen per song and Serie A soccer matches for a fee in conjunction with the 2002 FIFA World Cup. On April 2003, JCM collaborated with the systems company Wildcard to offer "Disney on PLUS e," a divination and video game content using Disney characters. Video games were distributed by Bandai Group companies in May of the same year and by Namco in August of the same year, and in April 2004, Epoch distributed a game themed on the Sylvanian Families.

JCM's annual sales grew to 9.242 billion yen after the introduction of PLUS e. However, JCM was saddled with debts of approximately 25.311 billion yen due to the accumulated financial burden from having to bear all costs of equipment, including PLUS e, from installation to operation and maintenance, and from being unable to keep up with the rapid expansion of its business. On August 5, 2004, the company filed for civil rehabilitation proceedings with the Tokyo District Court. A device was still installed in each restaurant after the civil rehabilitation proceedings, but was removed from all restaurants as of September 2005.

Availability

With the removal of the device, the content was also lost forever as it was no longer available.
