Man of Steel is a 2013 superhero film that stars the DC Comics character, Superman. The film was directed by Zack Snyder, and its story and screenplay was developed by David S. Goyer, with Christopher Nolan as its producer. The film depicting the character's origin lore, and it is the first installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) series of films.

In the film, Clark Kent learns that he is an overpowered alien from the fictional planet Krypton. He assumes the role of mankind's protector as the one and only Superman, facing General Zod and preventing him from destroying the entire human race.

Like the successor film, Batman v Superman, that have an ultimate edition 30 minutes longer, it seems there is a longer version of Man of Steel. The final running time that hit theatres was only 2 hours and 23 minutes. However, according to various reports, it turns out that the very first assembly cut of Man Of Steel was over 3 hours long.

Deleted/Extended Scenes

  • A longer battle scene on Krypton that would have featured more of Kelex. (some of this material is shown in the novelization.)
  • A scene with an infant Superman being treated by a pediatrician was filmed but cut.
  • David Goyer explained:

"There’s a scene, placed between Kal-El’s rocket ship crash-landing in Kansas and an adult Clark working at the fishing boat, where Jonathan and Martha take baby Clark to a pediatrician, because he’s acting strange, due to his superpowers beginning to develop. The doctor decides to check baby Clark’s hearing by emitting sounds into his ear canal. Due to the super-hearing, baby Clark lets out a cry that shatters all of the hospital’s windows as well as setting off alarms of all cars nearby. It was filmed, but cut because it felt out of place."

Note: (This scene is featured in the novelization and in the books Man of Steel: Superman's Superpowers and Man of Steel: The Early Years: Junior Novel.)

  • Extended oil rig scene where Clark is searching for the trapped.
  • A small scene of Clark petting a dog in Canada.
  • A scene of General Dru-Zod attacking other Earth cities.
  • A scene with Lois being interrogated by the FBI following Zod's announcement, and refuses to talk.
  • A scene of Clark leaving the church after speaking to Father Leone in which there's dialogue cut, “I won’t betray them.”, “You already have.”. This dialogue was used in the promotional trailer.
  • After Clark is bullied, Jonathan Kent takes him fishing without telling Martha. (this scene is featured in the novel Man of Steel: The Early Years.)
  • A scene where Jonathan takes Clark hunting and ends up killing a deer, with Jonathan emphasizing the reality of having to take a life.
  • A scene set in Canada where Clark tries to hitchhike.
  • A scene showing the Kent farm covered in fog.
  • A scene of Lois Lane featuring The Topeka Capital-Journal newspapers.
  • An alternate ending, in which Clark Kent didn't kill General Zod. That ending was meant to serve as a backup in case David Goyer and Zack Snyder didn't want to go through with having Superman commit murder.

Availability

Due to the mediocre reception both at the box office and in critics at the time of its release, the deleted scenes have not resurfaced on home media such as DVD or Blu-Ray. The only thing we have of all this material is in 2 novelizations of the film, Man of Steel: Superman's Superpowers and Man of Steel: The Early Years: Junior Novel, a YouTube video that compiles these scenes and the main trailer with the dialogue removed.
