False! The Popeye Movie was cancelled due that Sony Pictures and Genndy Tartakovsky couldn't get to an agreement to the creatives issues. Sony wanted a movie for the "fellow kids" while Tartakovsky wanted to make a 100% "Loyal to the Comic-Strips" movie!
In fact, the Popeye movie was cancelled on March 2015... But Sony acquired the rights for "The Emoji Movie" on July 2015!
The Emoji Movie wasn't responsible for nothing out of have an awful script (The animation is good, but the story is just average).
