Toy story double feature poster.jpg

The theatrical poster.

Status: Partially Found

In 2009 Disney and Pixar theatrically re-released Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D as a double feature as part of a marketing campaign for the then-upcoming Toy Story 3. Due to the almost three-hour combined run time of Toy Story and Toy Story 2, Disney and Pixar created two different intermissions, one five minutes in length and the other 10 minutes in length, hosted by the characters of both films, to be played between Toy Story and Toy Story 2. This was done to allow moviegoers to take a break between movies without missing any portions of the main features.

Introduction

Before the start of Toy Story; Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the toys introduce themselves and explain how the intermission would work, in Mystery Science Theater 3000-style silhouette.

Intermissions

Following the credits of Toy Story; the characters are happy with what they just saw. In one corner of the screen there is either a five-minute or a 10-minute timer that counts down to the start of Toy Story 2. During the intermission, they play trivia about the events, characters, and production of both films. At the end of the intermission, they prepare to watch Toy Story 2, again in MST3K-style silhouette.

Listed below are the ordered events of intermissions and prologues taken from a review of the "feature" from it's release date.

  • 2D Still of Woody – Put Your 3D Glasses On!
  • Theatrical Trailers
  • Alice in Wonderland 3D
  • Disney’s A Christmas Carol 3D
  • Toy Story 3 3D
  • Still – Recycle Your 3D Glasses
  • 2D Double Feature Intro with Buzz, Jessie, Rex and Hamm
  • Toy Story 3D
  • Intermission – Trivia and Treats
  • 26 Trivia Questions (multiple choice, unscramble, fun facts, etc.)
  • New Animation – Woody and Bullseye Play Football!
  • Toy Story Treat – Rex #1
  • Toy Story Treat – Rex #2
  • Toy Story Treat – Aliens
  • New Animation – Woody and Jessie Dancing
  • Toy Story Treat – Buzz and Woody Shadow Puppets
  • Toy Story Treat – Woody and Lenny Staring Contest
  • Countdown to Toy Story 2 3D
  • Toy Story 2 3D
  • Toy Story 2 Outtakes

Availability

During release, theaters had the choice of either using the five-minute or ten-minute intermission. At the end of the release run, theaters had to return the hard drive containing the movie and files to Disney. Since the intermissions were made specifically for the double feature release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2, it has not seen a home release. With the difficulty of pirating a 3D movie and the prior commercial home media releases of both movies, it is unlikely that someone made a bootleg of the intermission.

The Quiz's Possible Hiding Place

A possible slide from the quiz

There was also apparently a quiz part of the intermission that was posted onto Disney's official website for Toy Story sometime during late April 2010. The quiz was up until September 2010, probably because it was a time frame of when it was released to the "height of the film". There is a link inside of the Pixar Planet blog, but it now takes you to the modern Toy Story page.[1] It is possible to find the long lost quiz through The Wayback Machine, but its archived saved pages are scarce and non-responsive, leading for a responsive version of the quiz very difficult.
