Sonic the Hedgehog is a 2020 action-adventure comedy film based on the video game series of the same name published by Sega. The film was directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. It stars Ben Schwartz (as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog), James Marsden, and Jim Carrey. The plot follows Sonic, a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds, who teams up with a town sheriff to stop mad scientist Dr. Robotnik.

Background

CCXP stands for Comic Con Experience, which is a comic book convention that takes place annually in Brazil. CCXP is the largest pop culture event in Latin America, featuring panels, screenings, exhibits, and merchandise related to comics, movies, TV shows, video games, and other aspects of pop culture. CCXP 2018 was the 5th edition of the event and took place in São Paulo from December 6 to December 9, 2018. It attracted thousands of attendees and featured appearances by celebrities, artists, and creators from various entertainment industries. At CCXP 2018, the Sonic movie trailer showcased the design and appearance of the titular character, Sonic the Hedgehog, in the live-action adaptation.

While the footage was very short, it showed Sonic on a highway and then quickly running off screen. The footage ended with a title card saying Sonic, so that could be the film’s official title.^[1]

After being shown at CCXP 2018, the trailer was finalized for public viewing, with some differences being made. The trailer was met with a handful of criticism, mainly because of the design used for Sonic.^[2] The trailer and movie were later fully revised to include a better design for Sonic, pushing the release date forward.

Availability

No footage of the trailer has been leaked to the public, possibly due to the restriction of recording the event, though it may have to do with other reasons. It was discovered that the trailer from CCXP was formerly available on Twitter, though it was taken down by the copyright holders.^[3] As of now, only a few pictures, along with some concept art, and a description of the full trailer, have resurfaced.
