Match Game is an American game show that was created by Mark Goodson and Bill Todman and first started airing on NBC in 1962. The show is a simple "fill-in-the-blank" format where often hilarious answers are given. It has been brought back several times in the decades since with the most recent one premiering on ABC in 2016, the version most people recognize is the one that aired on CBS in the 1970's for a total of 2,210 episodes across three versions that aired in the decade (one for CBS Daytime and two separate Syndicated version) and would go on to be a staple of game shows from the decade.

For a show that aired throughout the 1970's, there is a lot of surviving episodes (almost accounting the entire run) and nearly all of them have been reran on Game Show Network since the channel's inception in 1994 and on Buzzr (a channel owned by the current rights-owners) since that channel's inception in 2015<ref>http://www.worldscreen.com/articles/display/50051</ref>. However a small number of those episodes have been taken out of rotation in the years since due to it's content and some episodes have never been seen since they last aired in the 1970's.

While some episodes may have deteriorated over the years, many episodes of the show that did air in the 1970's have since vanished from the Goodson-Todman archives. Which is odd considering that this and many other Goodson-Todman productions that aired in the 1970's like The Price Is Right, Beat The Clock, To Tell The Truth, Family Feud and Card Sharks have a large number of surviving episodes when most networks or production companies in the decade would erase the show's tapes to make room for other shows. Many of the missing episodes remain at large and their current whereabouts are a mystery.

Match Game is an American game show that was created by Mark Goodson and Bill Todman and first started airing on NBC in 1962. The show is a simple "fill-in-the-blank" format where often hilarious answers are given. It has been brought back several times in the decades since with the most recent one airing on ABC from 2016 to 2021, the version most people recognize is the one that aired on CBS in the 1970s for a total of 2,210 episodes across three versions that aired in the decade (one for CBS Daytime and two separate Syndicated version) and would go on to be a staple of game shows from the decade.

For a show that aired throughout the 1970s, there is a lot of surviving episodes (almost accounting the entire run) and nearly all of them have been reran on Game Show Network since the channel's inception in 1994 and on Buzzr (a channel owned by the current rights-owners) since that channel's inception in 2015[1]. However, a small number of those episodes have been taken out of rotation in the years since due to their content and some episodes have never been seen since they last aired in the 1970s.

Availability

Many episodes were taken out of rotation due to either the offensive nature of some questions or jokes, clearances[5] or the deterioration of the master tapes. Game Show Network still airs Match Game as of the writing of this article, but the number of episodes being reran has gone down significantly either due to licensing issues or its offensive content. With the introduction of Buzzr in 2015, many episodes that Game Show Network previously left out of rotation began to emerge (mostly the ones with clearances). Recordings of the banned episodes have become a rarity in the years since they last aired on television. YouTube user "MatchGameProductions" was able to track down most of these rare recordings and uploaded them to his channel.

While some episodes may have deteriorated over the years, many episodes of the show that did air in the 1970s have since vanished from the Goodson-Todman archives. This is odd considering that this and many other Goodson-Todman productions that aired in the 1970s like The Price Is Right, Beat The Clock, To Tell The Truth, Family Feud and Card Sharks have a large number of surviving episodes when most networks or production companies in the decade would erase the show's tapes to make room for other shows. Many of the missing episodes remain at large and their current whereabouts are a mystery.
