How and Why was a comedy TV pilot written and directed by Charlie Kaufman who previously wrote the films “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Synecdoche, New York”. The show would have starred John Hawkes, Michael Cera, Sally Hawkins and Catherine Keener.[1][2]

Premise

The plot of the potential series was about a man called Goodman Hesselman (played by John Hawkes) who lost his job as a TV show presenter and was replaced by a younger host. He then starts working on a new show in which he has to work for a boss more youthful than him (the boss being played by Michael Cera). [3]

Unsold Pilot

The television channel FX ordered the pilot's creation but it wasn't picked up for a whole series by the network. The producers of the pilot then tried to sell the series to other outlets but had little success. [3][4]

Availability

Photos of the pilot are available on production designer Molly Hughes's website who worked on the episode, she also did the production design for Charlie Kaufman’s film “I'm Thinking of Ending Things”. The script for the pilot is available on a Charlie Kaufman fansite called “Being Charlie Kaufman” [5][6]
