Harimogu Harley (はりもぐハーリー, Harimogu Hārī, Hedgehog Harley) (also known as Harley Spiny) is a kids anime created by Takashi Murakami and animated by Image K and Studio Junio (Now known as SynergySP) that was originally created to be NHK's answer to the anime series Shimajiro.

Much like Yadamon, Nintama Rantaro (Season 2 onwards) and Ojarumaru, the anime was a series of 10-minute shorts that aired every weekday on NHK (Outside of NHK, this would be 3 segments in one episode). Much like Shounen Ashibe and Crayon Shin-chan, it was actually a seinen/adult manga turned into an anime primarily aimed at children.

The anime originally aired from August 5, 1996, to June 27, 1997, and was cancelled after 2 seasons and 140 episodes due to Image K going bankrupt (Season 1 (Episodes 1–80) aired from August 5, 1996, to November 22, 1996, Season 2 (Episodes 81–140) aired from April 7, 1997, to June 27, 1997). As of February 2018, this anime has now been dubbed in Chinese, Cantonese, Korean and Spanish.

Premise

In a part of the world lies the Animal Village. Living in the village is Harley, a small, mischievous and curious hedgehog who wants to find humans, and always goes apeshit everytime his thorns stick out. His friends include Risuko (a cheerful crybaby squirrel who wants to be a doctor when she grows up), Takuya (a mama’s boy mandrill who always wants to be number one), Agezo (an insomniac elephant who’s Risuko’s boyfriend) and Gaburine (a crocodile with an eating disorder).

Available Media

Aside from the plot, very little is known about the show since there is no footage online and little documentation.

On February 18, 2008, the first episode was uploaded to Niconico but it was later taken down by NHK. On December 6, 2010, the first 26 episodes were uploaded to YouTube but were later taken down by NHK on November 1, 2013. In 2013, a Photobucket/KnowYourMeme user named Silvercrossbow/Subjugator uploaded screenshots and GIFs of the first 26 episodes just in time before they were taken down by NHK.
