One theory about why the film was never released outside of theaters is that Nagano was dissatisfied with the movie due to its long production and receiving lukewarm reviews from critics. In contrast, another theory states that Nagano believed the film could only be experienced in a theater setting due to its 4k animation, and as such has refused any sort of downgraded home video release.

Gothicmade: Hana no Utame (also known as simply Gothicmade) is an anime film directed by Mamoru Nagano, originally released on November 1, 2012 in Japanese cinemas.

Production

The film had a rather long and drawn-out production process, with its initial website having appeared online in early 2006 and announced in Newtype Magazine. While it was planned to only be 30 minutes long, it was eventually extended into a full 70-minute film. One of the big reasons for its long production process was creating it in 4K resolution with Dolby Atmos surround sound, the first anime film to ever use these processes. Only 4 key animators were listed in its production, one of whom being Nagano himself. It is also notable in that none of the in-between or key animation was drawn by a foreign studio like in usual anime productions; it was created domestically across three Japanese studios (Sunrise, Madhouse, and Anitus-Kobe).

The film was produced by Kadokawa and released under Nagano's EDIT brand (referred to as Automatic Flowers studio), which he used as a replacement for his Toyspress publication company after he left it in 2006.

Loss

The film was never announced for any kind of home video release, but repeatedly appears in Japanese cinemas every few months or so upon demand using TOHO's Dreampass rerun system depending on the prefecture that requests it.

Nagano believed the film could only be experienced in a theater setting due to its 4k animation and usage of Dolby Atmos surround sound, and as such has refused any sort of downgraded home video release. Since the film continues to be requested for reruns, there appears no rush for it to be released outside of theaters. In a screening during November 2017, Nagano made a guest stage appearance and claimed that the film would never be released on disc.[1]

Availability

According to the film's official website, Gothicmade originally premiered in only nine theater locations in Japan, all belonging to TOHO: Sapporo, Tokyo (2x), Kawasaki, Makuhari, Fushimi, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hakata on November 1st. The first Dreampass rerun requests started as early as December 2012. Reruns can be spotted on TOHO's Dreampass site, where tickets can be bought as each screening becomes available in certain prefectures.

No plans for an international release have been announced.

Despite this, an OST CD and two art books for the film are still in print and can be bought in Japan. The film also ties into the setting and story of Nagano's currently running Five Star Stories manga, as the first sign of the controversial design changes that would occur in volume 13, released two years after this film, where all Mortar Headds are retconned into Gothicmades.
