High School Musical 2 Pop-Up Edition.png.png

A title screen for High School Musical 2: Pop-Up Edition

Status: Partially Found

During the 2000s and 2010s, Disney Channel aired special editions of several of their original movies that featured pop-ups with fun facts about the movies. These were referred to as the “What’s What Edition” or “Pop-Up Edition” in promos and on the title card. These pop-ups had facts that ranged from why the writers chose certain elements to something funny one of the cast members said on set. There were also some pop-ups where an actor from the movie would appear and say something. There has not been an archive of the pop-ups in a transcript format.

This format of special edition was seen in other children’s programming around this time period, such as the “Avatar Extras” edition of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which have been archived and are available on streaming platforms. [1]

These would have aired only a few times each, as they were special editions and not the standard edition of the movies. Additionally, none of the DVDs for these movies contain the “What’s What/Pop-Up Edition” as a bonus feature or setting. These special editions also cannot be found on Disney+ or other streaming platforms.

Films

There were at least 12 movies that had a “What’s What Edition.” There is confirmation of:

Availability

There is very little information on when exactly these editions aired and how many times they aired on Disney Channel. The oldest movie on this confirmed list, High School Musical, premiered in 2006, and the Pop-Up Edition likely aired in 2007. The newest movie, Lemonade Mouth, premiered in 2011, and the What’s What Edition likely aired in 2012.

Several bumpers and promos of these editions of the TV movies have been archived. However, there is very little archival of the movies themselves.
