I think it's worth pointing out that aspect ratio and resolution are two different, unrelated entities; a video shot in 4:3 is not necessarily in standard definition, and a video shot in 16:9 isn't necessarily HD. In the context of video resolution, "480," "720," and "1080" refer to the amount of horizontal scan lines that make up the footage, and aren't affected by the image's width.
