Batgirl is an American superhero film directed by  Arbi and Fallah about the DC Comics character Barbara Gordon / Batgirl that was anticipated to feature on HBO Max before the fusion with Discovery+ under Zaslav management of the studios which resulted of the full cancellation of several projects including the movie being mostly finished in 2022.[1]

Premise

The film would be an origin story of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, played by Leslie Grace as her cinematic debut,[2] vigilante in Gotham City and the daughter of police commissioner James Gordon, J. K. Simmons would reprise his role from Zack Snyder's Justice League,[3] both very close allies of Batman, the genius philanthrope billionaire that moonlights as detective vigilante crimefighter, Michael Keaton would reprise his role from the Tim Burton's Batman.[4] Brendan Fraser would play the main villain firefly, a pyromaniac psycho.[5]

Availability

After the fusion of its service with Discovery's, the now Warner Brothers Discover (WBD) announced that they had cancelled the release of the film on HBO Max or theatrically,[6] despite its planned release in 2022 on HBO Max,[7] making the film "effectively dead". According to TheWrap the company just felt the film "simply did not work" and went against the new desire and mandate from CEO David Zaslav to make DC films "big theatrical event films".[8] Watchers of the initial test screenings described the film as "a huge disappointment and looked cheap in comparison to other films", which could have been a factor in the studio's decision.[9] El Arbi and Fallah tried to rescue something out by log into the Warner Bros. servers and capture some of the footage on their cellphones, but they were frustrated.[10]
