Codeine is generally liked band of the Slowcore genre. Their 1990 debut album, Frigid Stars LP, received critical acclaim upon release.

The band recorded a new album under the title Barely Real. Under the pressure of following up their debut, the band felt that many of the songs they were writing were too similar to the songs on Frigid Stars. The lead singer/guitarist, Stephen Immerwahr, was unsatisfied with the results. He decided to cut over half the tracks planned for the album and decided to release the album as a five-song EP instead. A couple of the deleted tracks were re-recorded two years later for their 1994 album, The White Burch.

The original and deleted tracks have never surfaced and were not included in the 2012 reissuing of the EP. People believe the tracks were recorded over for The White Burch and original recordings are gone forever.
