Following the success of the 1998-2000 anime series Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 (a re-imagining of the 1987 OVA series simply titled Bubblegum Crisis), an announcement was made by ADV Films in late 2002 that a follow-up series had been put into pre-production, aptly titled Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2041.
