Status: Existence Unconfirmed

Twinkle Stars is a manga series that was serialised in the Japanese magazine Hana to Yume from 2007 to 2011. The whole series was compiled into eleven tankoubon volumes in Japan from 2008 to 2011. It was written and illustrated by Natsuki Takaya, of Fruits Basket fame. For several years, an official English translation of the series was difficult to access in English-speaking countries outside of Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand, as the only official translation in existence was from the Singapore-based manga publisher Chuang Yi, and it was distributed in Australia and New Zealand by Madman Entertainment.

Chuang Yi, which was perhaps most well-known for distributing the first official English translations of the Pokémon Adventures manga, ceased operations by early 2014[1].

From 2011 to 2013, Chuang Yi performed English translations of at least ten of the eleven tankoubon volumes of Twinkle Stars, though volumes one and six of this release seem to be harder to find than the other volumes that are known to exist, and they may be rare. As for volume eleven, it is unclear whether Chuang Yi translated and released this volume at all.

All of the volumes of the Chuang Yi release of Twinkle Stars that are confirmed to exist.

Likelihood of Existence

Madman Entertainment featured the Twinkle Stars series on their website until at least 2016. A page for volume 11 of the series existed,[2] and the page stated that the volume was released in October 2013, though a small news release by the website in November 2012 stated that the volume was originally going to be released in either February or July of 2013.[3] It is possible that this page was actually a placeholder, because the synopsis on the page was taken from the synopsis of the first volume, and the cover art on the page showed the cover of the original Japanese release. The page did include an ISBN number for the volume, but it has no results on WorldCat.

The list of Twinkle Stars volumes on the Chuang Yi website was only archived up to the release of the seventh volume[4].

If Chuang Yi’s release of the eleventh tankoubon does exist, then it may have had a limited release, as the translation would have been performed near the end of the company’s lifespan.

The entire Twinkle Stars story was later translated and subsequently published by Yen Press from 2016 to 2018 in the format of five omnibus volumes; making the story much more accessible to the rest of the English-speaking world. This probably means that most English-speaking fans of Natsuki Takaya’s works will now have no interest in finding out whether the end of the story had another, older, English translation.
