The title card for ToonHeads.

Status: Partially Lost

ToonHeads was an American animation anthology series consisting of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Hanna-Barbera, Warner Brothers, Jay Ward and Popeye shorts. Three to five shorts played corresponding to the topic of each episode with trivia in-between the shorts about the studio, who made it, the history behind it, and facts unbeknownst to many. It was originally broadcasted on Cartoon Network from 1992[1] to 2003. Reruns aired from 2003 to 2005 on Adult Swim and Boomerang, making it one of the longest-running Cartoon Network series. The show included eighty-nine episodes, two one-hour specials, and two half-hour specials, which were never aired.

Season 1

Episode two is found. Episode nine is missing its "return" bumper. Episode one and nineteen and twenty-two survive only with their intro. Promo's for "The Old West", "Daws Butler", and "Academy Award-Winning Toons" are available although their segments are missing. The rest have not resurfaced.

Season 4

This season started on November 19, 1999.[3] Every episode from the season is easily available online.

However, one episode never aired. This extended episode was to air in the fall of 2001 and was made in response to the June Bugs 2001 controversy.[5] The special, titled "The Twelve Missing Hares" focuses on Looney Tunes shorts featuring Bugs Bunny deemed unsuitable for broadcasting on Cartoon Network either due to negative racial stereotypes or World War II propaganda. The special only uses clips from each short along with various other material. The special covers how the shorts are products of their time, how they are incorrectly portraying different cultures, and how it is inappropriate to show them on a network catering to young audiences.[6] It was pulled from airing last minute. However, upon its leak on August 26th, 2022, it was discovered that the special was never completed.

Season 7

This season started on October 19th, 2003[3] and is the final season. Every episode from the season is easily available online.

However, a special episode never aired. "The Best of the Worst Cartoons Ever" otherwise known as "The Worst Cartoons Ever Made" is centred around the worst Hanna-Barbera, Ruby-Spears, and Filmation cartoons ever made. This episode showcases clips from various Scooby-Doo knockoffs, failed 70's H-B cartoon series, and the Filmation Tom and Jerry series. It also features the entirety of "Disco Droopy" as ToonHeads top pick of "The Best of the Worst Cartoons Ever". [7]However, it was left unaired due to the Cartoon Network executives being uncomfortable with the show poking fun at H-B cartoons.[8]

Notes

  • In the episode "Family Reunion" a sponsor bumper of SpaghettiOs is featured.
  • In the Los Angles Time article titled Banned War-Era ‘Bugs Bunny’ Films to Be Shown ‘in Context states that the marathon was supposed to air on fall 2001, however, the special itself proclaims that it going to air during the marathon in June.
  • In S03E06, "Midnight in the Bookstore", during the weekend of March 19th, 1999, "You're An Education" was replaced with a redrawn print of "I Like Mountain Music" (WB). "Speaking Of The Weather" (WB) was the cartoon shown after that. "Book Revue" (WB) then followed. New wraparounds were made for "I Like Mountain Music" and "Speaking Of The Weather" during the weekend of October 6th, 2000.
  • In S04E07, "Toro! Toro!", technical difficulties caused "The Mice Will Play" (WB) and “Sheep Wrecked” (MGM) to play instead of “Bully for Bugs”, and “Senor Droopy”, respectively. There was also the usage of bumpers from S04E06, "The Nice Mice of Warner Bros”. The correct cartoons and segments were reinstated on October 1st, 1999.
  • The only sort of home media release the show has ever had was the ToonHeads special: The Lost Cartoons and can be found on Disc 3 of The Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 1. as a bonus feature
  • Jerico Dvorak is running a project to find all the missing ToonHeads episodes not available to the fans of the show. He's asking if anyone recorded Cartoon Network from October 1992 to December 1996 and happens to have these missing ToonHeads episodes please contact him (jericod007@gmail.com) to get them transferred and preserved.
