Three Amigos is a comedy movie released in 1986. Directed by John Landis, it stars Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, and Martin Short as an acting trio in a misunderstood situation. While the movie received mixed reviews upon release, it enjoyed a moderate financial success and has become a cult classic since.

The movie had several cameos and roles by other stars, such as Phil Hartman, Jon Lovitz and Randy Newman. However, one sequence, starring the infamous comedian Sam Kinison, never made it to the final cut of the film.

Sam Kinisons Scene

According to descriptions, Sam played a ‘cannibalistic mountain man’ that the trio encounter. It was supposed to take place after they encounter the invisible swordsman. Lucky and Ned end up getting caught in a trap while trying to get water, after which Sam appears. He’s described as covered in leather, chicken feathers, and skulls, with blood over him and holding two axes. He runs down the mountain while Lucky and Ned yell at Dusty to shoot him, which Dusty replies “I don’t even know him!”.

It’s said that there’s several scenes where they try to kill him but he’s unstoppable. After Dusty finally shoots him fatally, he has an extended dying sequence, pulling out pictures of his children from his wallet and saying “How could you do this?” as he lays dying on the ground.

Post-production

According to John Landis, the scene was very funny and got a good reception in a test screening. However, he reluctantly had to cut it due to time constraints, seeing that the scene didn’t have much else to do with the main story.

In a 2009 interview with Bullz-Eye, Sam’s brother, Bill Kinison, claims that Sam and Chevy Chase hated each other, and that Sam was convinced that Chevy got it removed due to jealousy. Bill adds that he didn’t personally believe it though and Chevy denied the claim.

Availability

For the later DVD release, Landis was interested in putting Kinison’s scene as an extra. However, when he asked the studio where the footage, alongside other deleted material, was stored, they replied that they accidentally misplaced the footage, and that they were unsure where it went.

To this day, the footage has not appeared again, though Landis still says that he’s searching for it.
