Status: Partially Found

The Vanishing Act also known as The Vanishing Act: The Untold Story of the Missing Malaysian Plane is an unfinished English language film from India by director Rupesh Paul. The film revolves around a love triangle on a flight that eventually disappears. The movie was partially inspired by the vanishing of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370. A trailer was for the movie was shown at the 2014 Cannes film festival which was two months after the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines 370. Many festival-goers saw this as a distasteful attempt to capitalize off of recent tragedy and due to the fact, the plane had yet to be found.[1] Director Rupesh Paul tried to remedy the backlash by claiming that The Vanishing Act had nothing to do with the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight 370 and even wanted to release the film as early as August or September of 2014. Due to the amount of backlash, the release of the film was pushed back to 2015 but has never been released. As of now, the trailer is the only part of the film to have been released.

Production

While exact dates are not known, the trailer for The Vanishing Act was filmed in six days in Mumbai, India, and had received co-production offers from studios based in China and Malaysia. A budget of $3.5 million was given to start production and 200 extras were hired on. [2] While the trailer was shot, it is unknown how far into production before the trailer was shown at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

Backlash

When the trailer for The Vanishing Act debuted at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, the trailer received a great deal of backlash. Many saw it as an attempt to capitalize off of the vanishing of Malaysian Airlines flight 370. Entertainment magazine Variety would later go on to publish the trailer for The Vanishing Act on their youtube channel where it would go onto receive further backlash. When interviewed about the film, the director Rupesh Paul said:

These things came into my thoughts only after I came here. From the very first interview, I was only asked about this fact that we did not even think of much when we were pitching this in India. Nobody asked this question in India actually. When we came to Europe this was the only question I faced. Why should I gain out of somebody's pain?[3]

Further interviews stated that the director had never intended to put the trailer online and insisted that the film would still get a release in August or September of 2014.
