A rare still from the Osamu Tezuka Academy Awards special.

Status: Lost

The Osamu Tezuka Academy Awards (手塚治虫アカデミー大賞, sometimes written as 手塚治虫SP) was an animated special made by Tezuka Productions to celebrate the new millennium. The special contained a wide variety of different characters created by Osamu Tezuka, known as the "Star System". Characters would be given awards based on their performances throughout the years. Very little about the special has surfaced online, and it's considered completely lost.

Plot

Osamu Tezuka's "Star System" behaves differently than most other fictional worlds. This is due to Tezuka viewing each character as an actor/actress, and as such, would typecast these characters into different roles. Characters such as Hamegg and Lamp, for example, would often be cast as villains.

According to the official Tezuka Productions website, the character Ochanomizu would give awards to the best "Star System" actor based on their performance. Categories included 'Best Actor', 'Best Actress', etc. In the end, the Grand Prize was awarded to everyone.[1]

Ochanomizu, a central character in Astro Boy, would hand out rewards to different "Star System" characters.

Information

The special aired on TBS on December 31st, 1999 during the "38 Hour Television" (38時間テレビ) programming block. It was approx. 25 minutes and 30 seconds long, and aired from 9:00 to 9:30. It aired alongside an animated special by Tatsunoko Productions, and the double feature was known as "20th Century All Star Anime" (20世紀オールスターアニメ). The official Osamu Tezuka website briefly mentions that actors appeared during the special in live-action sections, but who these actors are is currently unknown.[1]

Availability

Besides what the official Osamu Tezuka website has provided, very little about the special has surfaced online. Cels from the special occasionally show up for sale on sites such as Yahoo Japan Auctions, but they often fetch for extremely high prices. Some speculate that the reason the special hasn’t seen any official release is due to Tatsunoko Productions involvement. However, this hasn’t been confirmed. The special currently remains completely lost.
