Status: Existence Unconfirmed

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a platformer developed by the Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Genesis in 1992. Rumors of an enhanced port for the Sega CD titled Super Sonic[1] (alternatively known as Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Escape from Ring Zone[2] or Sonic 2 CD[3]) were present in various gaming magazines from early-1992 to mid-1993.

Background

The port was first mentioned in issue #7 of Brazilian gaming magazine Supergame in a short article titled "'Super' Sonic 2 para CD-ROM!!". This is the only time the game is referred to as Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Escape from Ring Zone with later articles referring to the game as Super Sonic if they name it at all.[2] Most documented coverage of the game is from English-speaking publications so it's possible they used part of the article's title as the game's name. According to various magazines throughout the rest of 1992 the port was supposed to launch alongside the Genesis, Master System, and Game Gear versions of the game,[4] feature additional zones, special bonus rounds in-between stages,[5] CD-quality music,[1] and voice acting.[6] Rumors of the port's existence continued even after every other versions' releases and the port missing its supposed March 1993 release date[6] with its final mention being in Computer & Video Games issue #139 with them saying the port would release in Japan "any week now".[7] Obviously this did not happen and the game was supposedly reworked into Sonic CD[8] despite later reporting indicating that Sonic CD was birthed from the ashes of a Sonic the Hedgehog 1 port for the Sega CD.[9]

Availability

A build of the port has never been officially released or leaked to the public and it is unknown if one even exists.
