In 2014, Sony Pictures announced that an adaptation to Sony Interactive Entertainment's franchise Sly Cooper was in production. While a teaser trailer was released and a release date was announced, the film never came into fruition and is believed to be cancelled.

Background

The project was first announced by Blockade Entertainment producer Brad Foxhoven, The film was being directed by Kevin Munroe, who was also directing the Ratchet & Clank film and was being animated by Vancouver-based studio Rainmaker Entertainment. A 2016 release date was also announced.[1] At Wondercon 2016, Munroe stated that the film had yet to enter production and doubted it would be released later that year.[2] On October 26, 2016, in a now deleted tweet by Monroe, he said he hadn't worked on it for over a year and a half. Munroe would later move on to work on a Chinese Trolls film.[3]

After the commercial failure of the Ratchet & Clank film, Cartoon Brew editor Amid Amidi expressed doubt that Sly Cooper would ever be completed.[4] In September 2016, president and chief creative officer of Rainmaker Michael Hefferon said, “We believe in the approach we went for [with Ratchet & Clank], but [the film's performance] certainly makes us have to rethink timing, how we release and even budget numbers that we consider releasing films at.”[5] One year later, Rainmaker left the project.[6] As of 2022, news about the film went quiet. It is believed that the film is cancelled.

Post-Cancellation

After Rainmaker Entertainment left the film project, it was announced that a television series was in the works. Technicolor Animation Productions and PGS Entertainment would have been involved with the project.[7] The series would be 52 11-minute episodes, with half scheduled to premiere in October 2019, and the remaining in July 2020. A network this was planned for was not specified.[8] However, as of 2022, the series has not premiered and is currently believed to be in development hell.
