Robert Eggers is a film director, screenwriter and production designer, noted for his period horror movies The Witch and The Lighthouse, released in 2015 and 2019, respectively, both to critical acclaim. His third movie, The Northman, is scheduled for a 2022 release.

Early in his filmmaking career, Eggers worked on three short movies that were released over the span of six years. Only one of the three shorts is available to the public. Due to the other two shorts’ unavailability, online searches for them will for the most part lead to unrelated movies.

Hansel and Gretel (2007)

Status: Lost

Based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale of the same name, not much is known about this short, other than its cast and brief descriptions stating that its presentation is inspired by German Expressionist films from the 1920s. The movie reportedly also uses puppetry. It was first screened on the Boston Underground Film Festival, in March of 2007.[1]

It has its own page on the streaming platform MUBI, however the short is unavailable on the platform.[2]

The Tell-Tale Heart (2008)

Status: Partially Found

Based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, much like Hansel and Gretel, it also has an entry page on MUBI, though no movie is available there.[3] It was reportedly first shown at the Mar Del Plata Film Festival in Argentina, in November 2008, followed by screenings in U.S. film festivals in 2009.[4]

During an AMA session on Reddit, in 2019, Robert Eggers stated that The Tell-Tale Heart would be released to the public in the near future, however, it remains unreleased as of 2021, officially or otherwise.[5]

Clips of the movie were available on Jarin Blaschke’s portfolio, director of photography of this movie and all subsequent projects by Eggers, but were eventually removed.[6] However, brief shots from the movie can be seen in Blaschke’s demo reel from 2014. Aside from that, screengrabs are available on various websites, including on Robert Eggers’ own Squarespace page.[7]

Brothers (2013)

Status: Found

Made during pre-production of The Witch, this short movie, inspired by the Cain and Abel tale, was worked on as a proof-of-concept for producers Jay Van Hoy and Lars Knudsen who, impressed by its results, would go on to produce The Witch.[8] Despite the short being completed in 2013, it wasn’t until 2015 that Brothers had its premiere in an unknown film event.

Eventually, in 2019, the independent studio MEMORY got the distribution rights of the short and released it on Vimeo. Prior to that, Brothers was only available through small clips on Jarin Blaschke’s Vimeo account.
