Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour ''(Stylize: RR:09)'' is the ninth season of the MTV reality television series Road Rules. It took place mostly in the southern areas of the United States and in South Africa. A casting special aired on June 6th, 2000, and the season premiered two weeks later on June 19th, 2000.

When compared to prior seasons, Road Rules 9 (Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour) would be highly competitive. Fewer missions were completed for the sake of the experience. Rather, we’d see Roadies compete against other teams of competitors. They’d face: The Real World: New Orleans cast, a local fraternity, a group of MTV.com fans, and the band O-Town. Not every mission would be a face-off, because the cast did travel to South Africa to immerse themselves into a South African tribe. This episode would get the show nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Non-Fiction Program (Special Class) in 2001.<ref>[https://stopbeingpolite.com/2019/01/03/game-changers-road-rules-maximum-velocity-tour/ Game Changers: Road Rules Maximum Velocity Tour - Stop Being Polite], Season Review</ref>

This season would be the introduction of the role of 'Road Master'. Unlike future seasons of Road Rules this iteration was a fictional character who gave the cast their tasks during each episode. This season the Road Master was played by Rainn Wilson, who is most famous for his role as Dwight Schrute on the NBC sitcom The Office. <ref>[https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0933988/ Rainn Wilson IMDb], IMDb Profile</ref>

He is a moody man who needs to be watched. His friends say that he is not violent, but I can't help thinking that he may explode, physically and emotionally (more emotionally than physically). His friends call him "mean-ass Laterrian" because he doesn't take "sh**" from anyone. He says he makes everyone feel miserable when he's in a bad mood. : A 20-year-old athletic snowboarding queen. She calls herself positively schizo. She has attended a junior college for advertising and design and beauty college. |  One by one, Msaada, Theo, Holly, James, Laterrian, and Kathryn arrive to the desert location in Sedona, Arizona where the "Maximum Velocity Tour" begins. Inside their motor home, they are greeted by "The Road Master." The first mission toward winning the maximum prize of $100,000 requires every team member to walk across a tightrope that is attached to two hot air balloons. All six face their fears and complete the mission successfully. Theo feels distant from the group while Holly and James develop a pattern of flirtation. The second mission takes place in Flagstaff, Arizona, where the Road Rulers must test the following two products among students on a college campus: a breast enhancer and a penis pump. On to Provo, Utah where Holly, Msaada, and Kathryn get jealous when the boys invite girls from the gym to a hot tub party at the hotel.

|Theo explains to Msaada that he left home as a teenager and has not seen his mother in over a year. The Road Rulers get a big surprise in the next mission as they're each greeted by one of their parents, who came to participate in a game show called "Parent Trap." The object of the game is to find out how much each parent and child knows about one another. The parents are skeptical about the final portion of the game, which requires them to bungee-jump tandem style with their children. One by one, each of the teams successfully jumps a free-fall distance of 70 feet. James tells Theo about his dislike for the girls in the group and his difficulty in dealing with traveling in the RV with people he doesn't get along with. The next mission brings the Road Rulers to Augusta where they are greeted by an arena full of monster trucks. The Road Rulers must compete against a team of fraternity and sorority members from Georgia in several events involving monster trucks. After three events, the two teams are tied and the level of competition continues to grow. In the final event, James races a monster truck aggressively over four feet of bumps, beating the other team, but damaging the truck. The referee decides to disqualify James' win because of the damage caused to the truck, giving the Greek team the overall $6000 win in the competition.

|The Road Rulers head into Key West, FL where they learn that their next mission requires them to go deep sea diving. One by one, each Road Ruler completes one free dive to see how deep they can go. The team will win this mission if each member sets a deeper goal for the second day dive, and they achieve it. The team gets frustrated when Theo sets an unrealistic and dangerous diving goal, jeopardizing the win for everyone. Theo meets his aggressive goal along with the rest of the team, resulting in another successful mission. The Road Rulers put together the individual flags they retrieved during the dive, which provide a clue that their next mission will occur in South Africa.

The team will win this mission if each member sets a deeper goal for the second-day dive, and they achieve it.

Season Info

Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour (Stylize: RR:09) is the ninth season of the MTV reality television series Road Rules.

This episode would get the show nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Non-Fiction Program (Special Class) in 2001.[1]

The theme music for the series is the song 'Square Rave' by English DJ Squarepusher. The track was taken from his fourth studio album - Selection Sixteen, released in 1999 on Warp Records. [2]

Rainn Wilson as the Road Master

This season would be the introduction of the role of 'Road Master'. Unlike future seasons of Road Rules, this iteration was a fictional character who gave the cast their tasks during each episode. This season the Road Master was played by Rainn Wilson, who is most famous for his role as Dwight Schrute on the NBC sitcom The Office. [3]

Out of the 14 seasons of Road Rules to air from 1995 to 2007 and even its sister show The Real World which lasted for 33 seasons from 1992 to 2019, Season 9 of Road Rules (Maximum Velocity Tour) is the only season that is not archived anywhere on the internet.

History

Road Rules is an MTV reality show that was a sister show of the network's flagship reality show, The Real World. The series debuted on July 19th, 1995, and ended on May 9th, 2007. This allowed Road Rules a total of 14 seasons and 12 years on the air.

The series followed five to six strangers, between the ages of 18 and 24, stripped of their money and restricted to a life in an RV, travelling from location to location. The strangers were guided by a set of clues and missions to complete at each location.

Cast

  • Theo Vonkurnatowski - Mandeville, Louisiana:
This 19-year-old guy is a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll. He is studying at the University of Louisiana and dreams of being a children's author/magazine editor. Raised in Louisiana all his life, Theo is an adorable southerner who speaks his own language, "Theoisms." Theo has the curiosity and imagination of a two-year-old with the cunning of a natural instigator. He loves to make people laugh or make them irritated. He says he hates to be alone. Theo is a self-professed slob. His roommates call him "the dirty bird." He has a girlfriend, Mandy, who he has been seeing for a few months. He cares about her, but it does not seem to be serious right now. "If I'm wise, I'll make things work. But knowing me, I'll find a way to completely screw it up." Mr. Charming will be pursued on this road trip, no doubt.
  • Laterrian Wallace - Stanley, North Carolina:
A 22-year-old handsome, athletic African-American J Crew model. He has a smile that leaves a lasting imprint on your mind. He graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill with a degree in Biology. Eventually, he plans to attend medical school. He thinks that he will be an interesting roommate because he can go from "the most serious ‘leave me alone I'll do what I want’ type of attitude to a happy go lucky silly kind of guy." He is a moody man who needs to be watched. Not until sophomore year did he begin to drink, have sex and feel good about his masculinity.
  • Msaada Nia - South Central LA, California:
A 22-year-old, 4'11” African-American firecracker. A tap dancing queen from South Central Los Angeles. She's a college student who hopes to open up a dance school in her community for children. Her dream is to be an accomplished performer and to use her skills to contribute to the creative development of kids. Msaada, whose name means "help" in Swahili, is proud of her heritage and neighborhood. Despite her pride, she openly rejects negative stereotypes associated with the "ghetto." She's a self-proclaimed "nerdy kid from South Central." She's involved in an interracial relationship to the dismay of her father. Her boyfriend Vincent is a Parisian magician. Msaada comes from a very religious, close-knit family. She lives with four sisters and her father, who is a preacher. She hopes to learn more about the bible, and experience the fellowship of church. She does not drink or use drugs. Msaada is a very focused and talented young woman. This trip is going to take her out of her comfort zone and immerse her in an unpredictable journey.
  • Kathryn Omeg - The Dalles, Oregon:
A 21-year-old Caucasian female from Oregon. Kathryn is about to graduate Cornell University and enter the corporate business world. Now her plans are on hold as she begins an adventurous journey on the road. Will she let go of the corporate blue suit and let loose? She loves to party and have a good time. She grew up on a cherry farm with parents who are still married. Kathryn must be in control at all times. When out of control, she becomes angry and anxious. Kathryn loves to meet men and date. She recently began seeing a guy named Reed. He is very different from guys she's dated in the past. According to Kathryn "he doesn't need a lot of fixing," though she says she likes the drama and sense of satisfaction from knowing she fixed a man.
  • James Orlando - Loomis, California:
A 20-year-old All-American rugby player of Italian and Irish descent from California. Jim's a sophomore at UC - Berkeley. He is in a fraternity and on the rugby team. He says he can be stubborn and egotistical. He's a devout Catholic who attended a Jesuit high school. His father was once a priest in the Catholic Church, who left it to marry Jim’s mother. Jim comes from a close family. He has four siblings, two sisters and two brothers. He is very close and protective of his younger sister Lauren. He remains close to both his parents, his heroes.
  • Holly Brentson - Auburn, California:
A 20-year-old athletic snowboarding queen. She calls herself positively schizo. She has attended a junior college for advertising and design and beauty college. She feels that anyone who thinks that the only way to a good career is four years at a highly overpriced sardine can of a university is brainwashed. Holly loves sex. She asks "does the word nympho mean anything to you?" She claims she cannot go for long periods of time without some type of sexual activity. She is not in a relationship at this time.

The object of the game is to find out how much each parent and child knows about one another. The parents are skeptical about the final portion of the game, which requires them to bungee-jump tandem style with their children. One by one, each of the teams successfully jumps a free-fall distance of 70 feet.
