Smash Mouth is an American ska-punk band that was formed in 1994 by lead singer Steve Harwell, drummer Kevin Coleman, guitarist Greg Camp and bassist Paul De Lisle. The band is best know for their hits "Walking On The Sun", a cover of The Monkees' "I'm A Believer" and most famously "All Star", the latter of which was used in the films Mystery Men and Shrek. The band went through several lineup changes since their formation with the most prominent member being De Lisle and the band continues to perform live and release new music.

History

In January 2005, the band announced that they were recording their fifth album and listed several songs expected to appear on the album including "Beside Myself", "Quality Control", "Killer Bees", "Duty Free" and "Back Pocket"[1] with other song titles announced in the following months including "The Crawl", "Hey L.A.", "Gateway Car", "Old Habits", "Stop Gettin' Low"[2] and "Sugar"[3]. In May 2005, they announced on their website that the title of the album will be Old Habits with a planned release in the Summer of 2005[4]. The tracklist for the album was also revealed on the discography page of their website[5]. However, it was postponed to the holiday season of the same year[6]. The band performed the planned first single "Gateway Car" during an appearance on Last Call with Carson Daly that September[7]. After the performance, the album was delayed again to "January or February 2006"[8], likely due to Steve Harwell's commitment to the VH1 reality show The Surreal Life and Harwell later stating that the album "wasn't perfect"[9]. A compilation album The Gift of Rock was released in the Holiday season in 2005 to make up for the delay of Old Habits. The album again missed it's planned release dates and following The Surreal Life's run from March 19th to May 14th, 2006, the band returned to the studio to record a whole new album of material (along with some songs from Old Habits), the album would later become Summer Girl and would get released in September 2006 and Old Habits was shelved[10].

Availability

Aside from the tracks reused for Summer Girl, the album has never been released. Duty Free and a cover of Depche Mode's Never Let Me Down Again were released on the band's Soundcloud in 2016, but Duty Free has since been removed for unknown reasons, but the song can be heard on YouTube. Baby Please Don't Go would appear on guitarist Greg Camp's solo album Defektor that was released in September 2008. In 2020, reddit user u/itsgallus discovered that the band's label Spirit Music Group released short snippets of the band's songs on their website (including the ones from Old Habits that have never been heard)[11]. It's unlikely the album will ever be released in it's entirety due to Harwell's departure from the band in 2021 following a series of intoxicated appearances at several of the band's concerts.
