Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch (マーメイドメロディーぴちぴちピッチ) is a shoujo anime based on a manga by Michiko Yokote that originally ran its first season in Japan from April 5th, 2003, to March 27th, 2004. Revolving around a mermaid princess of the North Pacific Ocean who sets out to find the boy she saved during a Tsunami. In June 2004, ADV Films announced their acquisition of the license for both the first season and at the time currently airing the second season (Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure), with the intention of turning the show into a popular children's franchise in North America. Due to a lack of financial backers, ADV dropped the license for Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch in 2005. Only clips of the English dub have since surfaced.

Plot

Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch revolves around a character named Lucia who is the princess of the North Pacific Ocean. One night she saves a boy who falls overboard from a ship and entrusts him with her powerful pearl. Now Lucia must go to the human realm to reclaim her pearl.[1]

Background

In 2004, the now-defunct anime distribution company ADV films acquired the rights for Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch with the intention of bringing it to an English speaking audience. ADV dubbed the entire first season of the show, pitching it to various children's networks (likely Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network), who ended up "re-evaluating the market" and passing on the show. As ADV felt that releasing a 52-episode anime aimed at children without any sort of associated television deal wouldn't be profitable, they dropped the license due to a lack of financial backers and with no channel willing to take the dub.[2]

Availability

According to multiple sources, ADV's English dub is currently being held by TV Aichi, the original broadcaster for the anime in Japan. It is believed that both the Spanish and the French dub of Pichi Pichi Pitch were based on the English dub; as such, it is likely that the dubbing companies in these countries hold copies of the English dub. (The original broadcast of the Spanish dub actually used the English opening that ADV created for the series.)
