Hoshi no Ko Poron (星の子ポロン, Star Child Poron) is a sci-fi comedy anime produced by Jiho Eigasha and animated by Nihon Douga[1] that aired from April 1, 1974 to March 21, 1975 in Japan. 260 episodes were made, at a length of around five minutes each, each having two shorts of at least two minutes long.[2] It is infamous for the show's poor production quality which lead to dozens of video remixes and MADs.

Plot

The titular character, Poron, is an alien child ("star child" as described in the title) who comes to Earth and befriends several animals, almost totally (and naïvely) ignoring humanity. However, the animal kids keep causing trouble in various places by their naughty antics and bad behaviors. Poron secretly unleashes his mysterious power to save and punish them.

Status

Eyewitness accounts (on the Nico Video wiki page)[3] state that the anime used a lot of electronic music, and also comment on the short length of the episodes, some of which seem to have been one to two minute-long skits bookended by the opening and ending credits.

On January 5, 2009, a episode titled "All the Traffic Lights Turned Blue!/You Should Not Prank the Brakes" was uploaded on Niconico by uiui. Later that year, 5 more episodes of Poron were uploaded.

On April 7, 2011, a episode titled "The Naughty Bear/The Poisonous Mushroom" was uploaded. Almost 5 years later, on January 22, 2016, a episode titled "It's an Ice Cream, Run!/Bye Bye Banana!" was uploaded on Niconico and its 2nd segment has been become a meme.

On May 21, 2016, during live broadcasting with the new discovered episode "The Carps Waterfall Climb/Water Walker", someone by the name morikawa said that he claims to has some episodes. Since then, the episodes were uploaded every Saturday.[4][5][6] As of updating, there are only 68 episodes, a total of 136 two minute segments.

It is very unlikely that the series would ever come out on DVD, due to the great number of stock music used in the episodes that would be very expensive to license and also, this series never has been re-aired since April of 1992 when it was last aired on Yamanashi Broadcasting System.[7]
