Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers is a 1989 slasher horror film. It is the fifth installment in the Halloween franchise, and the second in the Thorn Trilogy.

MPAA Censorship

Around the time of it's release, the MPAA was heavily censoring violent films, demanding constant re-cuts to allow for the film to receive an R rating. Other films suffering from this restraint include Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood and Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, with the former having many lost scenes of its own.

Original Opening

The Shape's unconscious body was originally found by an occult member, named Dr. Death, played by Theron Read, who would then have proceeded to carry him into a cave, where he would perform an incantation ritual, raising The Shape from the dead, before being killed. Actor Don Shanks claims this scene's removal was requested by series producer Moustapha Akkad, being disturbed by the occult material featured.[1] This is the only cut scene from the film known to have any viewable footage, being a small clip from behind the scenes content.

Uncut Violence

Prolonged shots of violence were either shortened or cut entirely to appease film censors. Through careless editing, possible lost sequences can be deduced, and include the following.

  • Michael the Greaser's body begins to twitch on the ground after being stabbed in the head with a garden tool, and was lingered on for less time than originally shot.
  • Police Deputy Eddy's death has a continuity error where glass shards are seen piercing his face even though the execution of the scene up to that point implies otherwise.
  • Billy is seen limping after nearly being hit by The Shape behind the wheel, suggesting there was an impact of unknown magnitude shot.
  • In the tense laundry chute scene, The Shape is seen stabbing into said passage with Jamie inside. She is seen crawling out of the intake on the floor above with a vertical stab wound spanning a great span of her leg. Select pages with no sources claim that a brutal clip of her leg being sliced was in the first cut of the film.
  • One change rumored to have existed was footage of Michael Myers with burn makeup near the ending. So the story goes the producers, impressed by concept art, gave the cosmetics team a choice to either apply grotesque burn marks to Michael's face, mirroring his immolation at the end of Halloween II, or forgo the effort by obscuring his face in shadow, like in the final film. Unless if the team's decision to favor the former was overruled before shooting, this scene may not be real.

Rediscovery

In 2019, photos of master tapes were published online by HalloweenMovies.com, with sites such as Bloody Disgusting interpreting it as news to come. In August 2021, it was announced that it was Shout Factory that found the master tapes to the uncut version of the film and will include scenes from the uncut version on their release of the film on October 5, 2021.[2][3]
