The Wizard is a 1927 horror film loosely based on the 1911 novel Balaoo, it was directed by Richard Rosson and distributed by Fox Film Corporation. It's best known for being one of the most sought after lost silent films along with London After Midnight.[1] The film also served an inspiration to the 1942 horror film Dr. Renault's Secret.

Synopsis

The film's about a professor name Paul Coriolos who's son was convicted and sentenced to death at the gallows for a murder he didn’t commit, he then seeks revenge by creating an ape-like creature named Balaoo to kill his adversaries. Catching the attention of a detective named Murphy and a newspaper reporter named Stanley Gordon, they both investigate and save two intended victims being Judge Webster and his daughter from murder.[2]

Status

The last known copy of the film was destroyed in a fire at Fox's vault in 1937. Since then no other copies have been found and only a few lobby cards and images from the film have resurfaced.[3]
